amnesty international condemns guantonimo bay!
Thank you Amnesty international for your condemnation for the horror of what is happening to those incarcerated in Guantonimo Bay Cuba....these people are being denied natural justice and their inhumane treatment is an offence against human rights!.....similarly in Australia ,asylumn seekers are being denied their human rights, under the mandatory detention system!.....neither the government or the labour opposition in this country can be proud of their actions concerning mandatory detention!

Observer at "ground zero''!
This was one of the paintings that took me to New York....in the aftermath of 9/11 i began to paint what i had witnessed on the television..certainly the most horrific spectacle that i had ever seen...over the months that followed the painting flowed freely until a time in early November when i started to paint portraits of victims ? or were they survivors?...I did not know....I went to N.Y. to see if i could answer that question... I am not sure i found the answer but I gained much from my journey....New York is a truly amazing and wonderful city and it was terrible to see the utter desolution of ground zero...I will never forget it !

Questions of planetary wellbeing!
The wars , political upheavals and endemic political corruption are unfortunately occurring against a backdrop of economic unsustainability and environmental degradation....and if we need a war{sic] it is against our own callous disregard for the well being of our beautiful mother planet....and the gifts she so freely bestows on us !

All the lies will unravel..!
From the events of 9/11 through to the invasion of Afghanistan and on to Iraq we have become part of the most elaborate deception....a litany of lies and manipulation that will be uncovered as the truth slowly unravels...and unravel it will! Our media have become willing partners to our corrupted governments...our so called free societies are maggot ridden not only by bad governance but also by terrible corporate corruption which reaches into the heart of our political leaders.....How does the Bush administration get away with their entwined links to the major oil and energy companies... What are the facts concerning George Bush Jnr's long standing {1979} links to the Bin Laden family...and to what extent has he profited by those links....these politicians are relying on us to believe these are just questions of coincidence and to mention them is ,as Vidal points out , considered bad taste.......well I have a bad taste because I believe that these so called coincidences stretch plausibility....and at the very least should be thoroughly investigated . Many innocent people have died in the last few years in this so called 'war against terrorism'....What if that has occurred against a background of endemic corruption ? Would that not be a terrible crime against humanity?

Great and eminent Australian condemns government for lying!
Bravo to Sir William Deane for standing up at Queensland university yesterday and condemning the Howard government on a range of issues .....these included the imfamous children overboard affair...the government made false claims deliberately, that asylumn seekers were throwing their children into the sea ......also Deane attacked the incarceration of children behind razor wire at detention centres { code for prison camp} such as Woomera and also criticised the govt for not aiding two Australian citizens incarcerated with no legal representation in Guantonimo bay ,Cuba......now Sir William Deane is no radical...he is a former high court judge and Govenor General of Australia and is hugely respected by the Australian community....and he is a man of great conscience......but as usual John Howard 'totally and comphrehensively denies the allegations'.....how often do you hear him say that?... He is a disgrace and history will illuminate the crimes of our current ill-government..... Wake up Australia! Wake up!

Tony Blair's defining moment!
Tony blair makes the assertion that the Iraq war will be a defining moment of this century....my question is..What does this moment define? He continues to assert that weapons of mass destruction will be found...he should resign if they are not. He asserts that peace in the middle-east is far more likely after the Iraq invasion...he makes particular reference to the roadmap for peace oulined by the U.S. in regard to an Israel/palestine peace settlement.....well we will see how that process will evolve over the next few years....meanwhile six american servicemen have sadly lost their lives to attacks in the last week...I believe that these attacks will increase as many millitant individuals from surrounding nations inculcate themselves as resistance within Iraq.....despite the official line the war is not over....and perhaps this will be like Vietnam a war that cannot possibly be won....... the invasion of Iraq has been the defining mistake of this century but unfortunately Tony Blair is to blind to see it.....and he charms himself with a peck on the cheek from an iraqi child...lovely photo opportunity!..I am so sick of these six foot six year olds we call our leaders.....we deserve better!

Iraq children malnourished!
The rate of child malnutrition in Iraq has doubled since the war and Black fever is reaching epidemic proportions in Baghdad.... for this to be suggested as the price of liberty and freedom is an obscenity .....the coalition leaders have and continue to distort language ....they can not be trusted and as of 30/5/2003 they uniformly , still insist ,on the existence of weapons of mass destruction......they should be called to account if this is not the case....Tony Blair has visited Basra in the last few days for a heavily cosmeticised visit ....he did not visit the outrageously overcrowded hospitals ...in fact he saw nothing that could possibly shake his belief..which indicates his moral cowardice...he has not the courage to truly look into dark places and Iraq right now is a truly darkened place!

Prime minister of Australia calculated liar.
Suddenly the pm recieves intelligence reports that blah blah blah...he is not to be believed as has been shown already by the litany of lies concerning the neccessity to invade Iraq...my plea is to the Australian people not to be conned by this man...he lied about the GST, never ever...he lied about the maritime dispute.. he has lied about banned weapons in Iraq....he continues to evade the truth and should be condemned....personally i believe that he and Tony Blair should be tried for war crimes.

Weapons of mass distraction!
Vidal's article discusses the campaign of the coalition to convince the people of the rightness of war, justified by the threat of weapons of mass destruction...in fact as is emerging in Iraq..it seems very unlikely that those weapons actually exist...in fact the coalition has been engaged in the use of weapons of mass distraction to coerce its populations into accepting the war as justifiable....to think so many young soldiers and innocent civilians would lose their lives over a hoax is absolutely grotesque...and if you think your government would not stoop so low then you are kidding yourself!....there is a huge story since Sept 11th ,afghanistan and iraq that is not being revealed....we have been conned!

Bin Laden family profits from U.S. armaments manufacture!
In one of those extreme ironies it seems incredible that the Bin Laden family pofits greatly from U.S. weapons manufacture....the Wall Street Journal noted on the 27th September 2001..." if the U.S. boosts defence spending in its quest to stop Osama Bin Laden's alleged terrorist activities, there may be one unexpected beneficiary ;Bin Laden's family...is an investor in a fund established by Carlyle Group, a well connected Washington merchant bank specialising in buyouts of defence and aerospace companies...Osama is one of more than 50 children of Mohammed Bin Laden, who built the families $5 billion business"..... even worse is the fact that George Bush senior has a considerable interest in the Carlyle group as well......in fact the business affairs of the Bush administation [ Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld and more] should be investigated as it is arguable that the war against terrorism is extremely profitable to them......it is important for me to note that these notions are very well discussed in Gore Vidal's article.

Why has there been no real enquiry into the events of 9/11.
There should be a wide ranging enquiry into the events of 9/11...many foreign nationals lost their lives in the attack and if the Bush administration is not prepared to have such an enquiry then the international community should hold its own in international courts....a full enquiry is absolutely essential....

Vidal raises serious questions about 9/11.
Gore Vidal raises a range of serious questions surrounding the events of 9/11...these ideas will be unpalatable for many but they are worthy of thorough investigation...particularly the actions of many of the Bush administation during the morning of the attack....it is 'normal procedure ' by law for fighter aircraft to be scrambled as soon as a domestic aircraft deviates from its flight plan..this does not require presidential approval which is only required to shoot down such aircraft.....on 9/11 ,four aircraft were hijacked simultaneously between 7:45am and 8:10am...unprecedented in U.S.history ... and all these hijacks, were monitored by air traffic control....fighter aircraft should have been easily scrambled by 8:15am....in fact this did not occurr until 9:40am one hour and twenty minutes after flight eleven had been hijacked and almost an hour after the north tower was hit....why?....why was General Richard B Myers, acting joint chief of staff so remote from the events unfolding that morning?..as general of Norad- airspace command , he did not act until the hijackers mission was almost completed.....Why?...I reiterate...by lawfighters should have been deployed by 8:15am and if they had they might very possibly have been able to divert or shoot down the hijacked aircraft.......Why were they not scrambled?

"The enemy within"
I am feeling quite sick...I have just read Gore Vidal's article "The enemy within" published in the Observer 27th Oct 2002 and readily available on the net...I am feeling somewhat foolish that I have not read this article months ago....I had vaguely heard about it...but did not get round to reading it until yesterday and a second read this morning...my first reaction was to physically vomit....the article is that disturbing......I would urge all to read this very important document that examines the events of 9/11...the lead up to it as well as the consequences ...particularly in regard to the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq.....I am quite shaken....an idealist such as I can be profoundly naive sometimes.....at the very least this article makes it quite clear that there are huge questions that have not been examined about the events of Sept 11th 2001.....this day changed global reality profoundly yet there has been know wide ranging enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the attack...only the house and senate intelligence committees looked into the potential breakdown among federal agencies....but beyond that nothing..Why?....this attack became the rationale for 'the war on terrorism ' that lead to the invasion of several soveriegn states, yet we no very little of the circumstances surrounding the attack...why?

Phallocentric weapons culture undermines art.
So many artists are currently struggling not to be drowned in phallocentric weapons culture....our human values are undermined and our artists are under-valued in the pathological deathwish...on one hand you can attempt to carry on as usual or despite the millitary culture or like me your practice is completely transformed in an attempt at resistance....but it is not what i hoped my practice might have become in a more sentient world....their are so many wonderful phenomena on our planet to be explored artistically but our art is diminished by our need to resist the fear and madness...we in the first world have not only the opportunity but the responsibility to be exemplars for our sorry planet rather than selfish power hungry vandals.

Parlous state of a nation.
Australian culture is being denuded by bad government....like most australians i like the cricket but i cannot help but think how rich our nation would be if we treated our cultural producers like we treat our sportsmen and women....our nation is in a parlous state....our wonderful actors , dancers ,artists and all are functioning in a cultural desert....and the situation declines year by year as this stupid government further undermines our cultural property...we are a country where you need to be an actuary to flourish....we are becoming a really boring place but more than that we...oppress asylum seekers, our indigenous people, our young people....medicare is being dismantled..education is being destroyed...our prison camps are atrocities..our environment suffers terribly....we have departed from international law to wage premptive war....the list goes on....this government has betrayed its people on so many fronts....we have been endlessly lied to and mislead.

Our vandal government is working on all fronts to diminish the cultural values of our country...they have wrested financial control of the affairs of our indigenous people ... ATSIC the body run by Aboriginal people to further their rights has been stripped of its own financial governance...this is a disgrace and further reinforces the paternalisic oppression of aboriginal people.

Soul of our nation being ripped apart.
The universities are the soul of our nation and they are being ripped apart by a moronic government. I have been teaching in a university for a while and it has been terrible to see how our wonderful young people are being ripped off ..despite the so called monitoring processes like quality assurance { quality joke } undergraduate degrees are printed on dunny rolls now. Students are not getting the breadth of education that students ten years ago were getting....the kinds of restructuring that have occurred over the last ten years were driven by economic rationalism ....pedagogy was not even a consideration....and so this current round of reform is just a further brick in the wall of devalueing education.....Brendan Nelson the minister for education has betrayed our young to ideology and he is to be condemned !

Tertiary Education disaster!
The australian government is currently seeking to impose an overhaul of australian tertiary education that is a complete disaster and will have a devastating impact on the culture of australian campuses.....the government argues that this is a current and fresh response to the already bleak funding situation in universities...it is to be noted that many of the so called innovations of this restructure are nothing new....Peter Costello the treasurer has been running the same line for 30 years since his day's as a member of the Monash university Liberal club { liberal is Australian code for tory or conservative}.....so there is little that is new or innovative about the governments decison...its just ideology pure and simple.......our campuses are going to become deserts if the government disallows compulsory general service fees for student associations...wave goodbye to student clubs, counselling services. student health services, cultural activities.....all that stuff that make campuses vibrant places.....just another example of the vandalism of the Howard regime in Australia.

Iraq population brutalised!
Lets not bandy words about this....the coalition invasion of Iraq has further brutalised the population of Iraq.....already suffering the terrible effects of ten years of U.N. sanctions which has denied the population many of the basic neccessities of life....no pencils for school children is a somewhat prosaic example....the people of Iraq have been and continue to be brutalised by the occupation of Iraq.....the effects of this brutalisation will take an enormous amount of time to heal...unfortunately western culture has become such a "now" culture we have lost a sense of historicy which inherently clashes with other cultures who do not "forget"....our loss of historical perspective is a form of oppression!

Yellow cake fraud.
In the lead up to the invasion of Iraq many claims were made by the coalition about the status of weapons of mass destruction as a justification for use of force to change the regime....it now appears that many of these claims had no basis in fact...in one instance a claim was made that iraq had secured a deal with Niger to buy a large quantity of yellow cake presumably to supply its alleged nuclear weapons program.....this was totally false and further than that documentation was deliberately falsified to back up the coalition argument for war.....someone in the coalition is guilty of fraud and should be brought to justice....but as you will understand this will not happen...the fact that no smoking guns have been found only furthers the embarrassment of the coalition......history will look back on a willful con job....but in the mean time neo-con forces have concretised their agenda by fraud and misrepresentation.

Iraq children under threat!
zziraqboyjpeg.BMP (332k file) Even though the ' war is over' sic.....the prevailing condition for Iraq citizens are extremely poor....and more of these suffering people die daily....a major problem for children is unexploded ordinance...shells ,bullets , mines etc....I cannot see how the situation can change in the near or mid future.....political uncertainty makes strong and clear planning almost impossible....it is very difficult to believe that the uncertainty of the palestinian and israeli 'roadmap' can possibly be successful ...and this will spill over into Iraq and Afghanistan were coalition forces will be targeted....very sad..even in the last few days attacks in Iraq have occurred....meanwhile as always it is the innocent citizens that suffer the most....it happened on 9/11...it happened in Iraq.....and it has been happening in Palestine forever.

I have some dear close friends who I admire very much...one of the traits they all seem to share with me is the willingness to sit down and have a good long discussion.... and we are not just talking turkey here...but discussions of art ,politics , philosophy. performance even science......that is such a gift in a world were so many people are afraid to talk deeply, a world of confection ...infantilised by the media...a world made superficial by products........and so I value my friends and ask of their understanding if i unknowingly let them down...and i thank them dearly for their support.

Another 9/11 image.
Painting in a city that you are visiting is quite difficult..perhaps what I liked so much about new York is that its a get down and do it kind of place.....working was easier...I would buy art supplies at Pearl art store on Canal street....the best art shop I have ever seen..and I was fortunate to get reasonably affordable accomodation in East harlemn around e127th street....but the most difficult aspect was the subject ,that I could not help but work on, despite the protestations of half my mind and soul which just did not know what the hell was going down....any way I have posted another of the N.Y. works.

9/11 ..our dark planet!
The attack on the world trade centre diminished all our lives and the terrible loss of innocent civilian lives leaves an awful stain on our history.....but I also believe that the lessons that needed to be learnt were not understood..instead radical conservative forces used the incident to further their idealogical imperatives. Their response was not new, there was no innovation or depth of discussion or philosophy but just a furthering of at least a decade of behind the scenes political manouvering...the people were manipulated to believe that the Iraq regime held some responsibility for the 9/11 outrage...despite the fact all evidence points to the contrary......the citizens of the coalition nations have been hijacked by the Perle, Wolferwitz, Rumsfeld triumvirate...and are part now of the perpertration of war crimes....and the light of our dark planet dims.

Another lost soul 9/11.
the paintings i made in New York city were very strange to me at the time i made them and it has taken much time for me to understand what i was doing..... were these pictures of people that had died or were they pictures of people that had survived? ....by 2002 I started to paint Afghanistan and more recently Iraq....since 9/11 ,much of my art has been concerned with human conflict....making pictures of the dead is a strange place for an artist to go and that has been painful to deal with.this is one of the New York paintings.

so there I was in New York city and all I could paint were faces...rough and quick on small canvas boards.....with enamels so they would dry fast....treatment like woodcuts.....all very fast, deliberate ..and i felt incredibly stupid cause I would go to the metripolitan musuem and be spun..and then i would go and paint for a few hours....I made 90 small paintings in New York but did not think to much of them till later...this is one.

9/11 a global disaster!
9/11 was a global disaster...and there are no winners {winners has become such a disgusting word]..I cannot tell you why but I spent about a year just painting the 9/11 horror and in this painting I painted the terrible destruction as I imagined it from the Brooklyn Bridge.....i went to New York city and i stood down on West broadway and felt that nothingness and a massive stars and stripes rippled from a line and plumbbob hung from an unseen crane on a cold night and the wind chill ripped my face in the smell of concrete. The catalyst for more suffering by more innocent people was and continues to unfold.

But I would always want to be available to the possibility of making something unlike anything I have made before ,and that sometimes happens ,.....I might appropriate a style because of its imformation carrying capacity...and then takes time to shake it off.....a new addition to the toolbox....a utility in the shed. I have been peeling back some layers for many years back now and that allows a facility to reach in and tear and that is what making art is and that voice is stronger often !

Iraq not going to plan.
The complications arising in the reconstruction of Iraq are not going to plan...why? ..because there wasn't a plan in the first place and it is this fact that makes the invasion of that nation a total joke [except that it is all to serious]...i would very much like for our leaders to define the concepts and words that they bandy around so freely eg freedom....what exactly do we mean by the word freedom....freedom to starve perhaps, because there is no food......or liberty....is this the liberty to de-hydrate because of no water or the liberty to die of typhoid.....or the freedom to lose your family to collateral[sic] damage....politics stink , we need some philosophy..we need a 21st century Plato or Aristotle to define the core needs of our human existence rather than the power plays of vested interests.....we need to develope our use of language to reduce uncertainty not to obfuscate political machinations that propel some defunct idealogy.

Who is Howard Dean ?
It was really really refreshing to hear a mainstream politician, a democrat in the US, express the view that the war in Iraq was not necessary..that hussein's regime was 'tinpot ' and of no threat whatsoever to the US...and in fact that the war has been a distraction from far more important issues...... now I am not really well tuned into US politics but I am aware of a democrat called Gephardt who is a presidential nominee and is floating a universal health plan of sorts and I have heard a guy called Robert bird crack some cool jokes about not finding weapons of mass destruction . However the Howard Dean speech was extra special and I agree with him very much except I would go further and say Iraq was a war crime on the basis of pre-emption. If I was a US citizen I would at the very least a democrat.

Apocalypse not now .
The divisions of rich nations and very poor nations are widening and the advanced western nations should be setting an example in the areas of human rights, international justice and religous and social tolerance.

Dismayed face !
We in the internationalised globalised economic powers of the first world have a resposibility to respect global cultural diversity....we must resist trying to homogenise the world....it is irresponsible and is caused by ignorance...and it occurrs in tiny unappreciable increments that will add up to a terrible global disaster....it was by increments that the Nazi's were able to institute their program of horror! It is by increments that we manipulate our population to accept what should be unacceptable just like the Nazi's.....we manipulate ignorance at great risk!

Thanks Mr Brian Deegan....
zzzzzface1jpeg.BMP (195k file)Brian Deegan is an Australian Magistrate who lost his son in the Bali bombing....he has travelled to Bali to attend the Trial of the alleged perpertrators of that terrible crime.....interestingly he is urging life inprisonment rather than the death penalty....thank you for your humanity Mr Deegan....but not only that he has taken up the plight of two children whose Indonesian mother was also killed in the Bali bombing.....the childrens father Mr Ibraham Sammaki , an Iranian citizen is currently in detention in an Australian prison camp under the mandatory detention system for those unfortunate people seeking asylumn..... Mr Deegan is trying to arrange for the children to visit their father for a number of weeks but our federal government will not allow that to happen..... it is a callous act on the part of the minister for immigration not to allow this visit to occurr....these children have not seen their father in 2 years and during that time lost their mother to the bali tragedy......Australia is an affluent ,comfortable nation it can easily afford to be far more generous to asylumn seekers and in particular to this poor seperated family....this government carps on about family values...well lets have some compassiom for Ibraham Sammaki and his two children.

The picture does not capture the scupture well but somehow I like what it does .....and it reminds me through a different light about my freinds back then....I feel like a diiferent kind of watcher now..certainly I am a kind of idealist...but you do need them on our dark planet !

Why....Coffin Nails !
Saw a documentary on endemic corruption presently poisoning the Russian political system....murder fraud corruption...when you reflect that 25 million russians died on the eastern front in WW11...16 million of which were civilians you would think that they would have learnt some fundamentals......but no...and so the same wheels keep on turning........like us they have the predilection to reduce humans to coffin nails..........25 million Russians and 5 million Germand died on the Eastern front .....total = 30 million people died in just one theatre of the war....it is staggering....add the other theatres and.......what have we learnt? To continue the coffin nail factory ?

Portrait of a desperado !
A portrait of a desperate man is necessary in these desperate times...cracked sanity.....blurred edges..so little to guide him through the darkness.....a man in search of illumination.....a man tired of consuming himself......man in a cultural vacuumn....a man who has lost his desire.......these seem to me the pressures that face us all....in a souless age where the values of money and power limit those aspects of life that are far more valuable........

Iraq debacle continues!
Iraq is in an incredible mess..the coalition and in particular the U.S. have created an extra-ordinary situation for which they are totally unprepared,.... real world complexity is a whole other deal from armchair war games and hamstrung neo-con ideology....innocent civilians continue to pay a high price for their liberation[sic]....the mantra of 'freedom' is a euphemism for western control of a culture that it cannot possibly understand.....and so we wreck what we fear ..we have to destroy the 'other'..homogenise at all cost..we are the barbarians...and innocent civilians will continue to pay the price..no medecines...no clean water..no power...no communications...no security...no money..no work...life in iraq is very bleak..but thats ok because we can cosy down tonight and watch "who wants to be a millionaire"...its pathetic!

Full judicial inquiry into Mandatory detention...essential!
A full judicial inquiry into mandatory detention is absolutely essential...revelations over the last few day's make it quite clear ,that the very least ,evidence is available to show systemic problems within the detention centres.....that's me trying to say it nicely.....the fact is the situation is totally barbaric..it has been manipulated in the most cynical way politically...it has taken place in a culture of denial...many innocent individual's have been harmed and traumatised by it....and it continues despite the minister's comment that it is now merely a 'historical issue'.....well Mr Ruddoch, it is an historical issue that is going to raise its head and eat you!

Torn from my poetics!
It is very early in the morning and the cleaners are wondering what the hell I am doing here.... I have posted a moth spirit to help myself to lift off into this day...and to cheer against the cold wet morning...it's going to be a 'what's it all about ? Alfie ! ' day, I can just tell..... I am musing about what i would like to say.. I have been swept up so much in the terrible tides of recent war and political shennanigans, that my writing {if writing it can possibly be called}and making has turned into a torrent of political invective......but I cannot help it despite the fact that there is a whole poetic realm beckoning me.. I cannot seem to touch it..in fact i feel torn from my poetics...reflecting on this it seems to me that that estrangement from poetics has more than just a personal dimension. Culturally we are all cast-a-ways . beachcombing for the fragments of the wreck of artistic dreams...swallowed up by voracious blood and power..forced to waste our magic...........

Oppressed and given no hope!
One of the most tragic ironies revealed on four corners was that it was in acm's interests to stir up trouble in their prison camps as troubled prison environments are more profitable.....very much like our war culture which operates on a similar absurdity !

They sewed their lips together!
Many already suffering post-traumatic distress disorders before their arrival in Australia are plunged even further into hell with the treatment they recieve in Australia's prison camp... 80% of those shown at Woomera in the Four corners expose were eventually given refugee status and were given visas but not before being humiliated tortured and reduced.....for what purpose? This is such a stain on Austalia's humanity......and they sewed their lips together because all they had left was their bodies....and all they needed and still need is compassion and help....mandatory detention stinks!

'Four Corners".....exposes Australian prison camp atrocities.
Four Corners the Australian broadcasting commission's important current affairs program lifted a lid last night with a remarkable but terribly disturbing expose of the Woomera Detention centre { code for prison camp].....It would seem to me that prima-faece evidence would exist to at least undertake a major investigation into ACM ,the private company that manages the prison camps, for breaches of duty of care and fraud. The video footage revealed by four corners was graphically barbarous and the government and particularly the immigration minister Phillip Ruddoch are to be condemned.....the truth and pschic damage to both the inmates and staff of ACM will be out over the next few years...and out it will be!

God Bless US .....while we kill and maim.
Nothing offends me more than the politicians who invoke god and his blessings whilst they inflict war on our planet....they kill and maim but claim some godly rightnessness obout their actions...historically this is a well worn idea....medieval popes did it before sending people to their deaths or the inquisition.....it was perpertrated by the crusaders who did the most horrific acts against Islam whose level of civility was so far advanced....the crusaders brought back from Islam new codes in chivalry and honour which made an important contribution to the developement of the west. Conservative politicians currently invoking the blessings of god are nothing but barbarians cloking themselves in a sickly and false goodness to make themselves palatable to ignorance.

I always thought Taraq Aziz a reasonable man...he certainly was the western face of the former Iraq Government....he has presumably been under house arrest for a number of weeks now and we have not heard a word of what he has been saying...this is true of a range of people from the former govt....their thoughts and words should be being made more public...it is really important in particular to establish more clearly the position of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq...do ? Did they exist ? When ? Where ?.......we must not forget that the legitimacy of the Iraq invasion rested on the undoubted existence of W.O.M.D.......what in particular is Taraq Aziz saying about W.O.M.D.....when will we hear what he has to say!

It is important to find life and joy in this desperate world we are living in...so I have drawn a picture of the young woman I saw on the tram...people are just amazing and it is so sad that our political and industrial leadership are so bereft of empathy that they are unable to shape a richer and deeper human experience for their constituency....instead they grasp the dollar and power...and belittle the human experience through the propagation of lies and distortion.

Beyond the nuclear threshold.
Developing , moving and using mini-nuclear weapons is just plain stupid...tactically and strategically they are silly and in modern weapons terms of no advantage . Just talking about weapons is stupid I feel totally diminished feeling that it is important to resist them...the world and people are too fascinating to want to fuck it all up.... what on earth does the Bush administration seek to gain in nuclear proliferation......tit for tat stategies are ineffective and the developement of these weapons just ramps up the possibilities of dirty bomb responses. Mini-nukes are obscene..
The U.S. millitary is currently considering the developement and use in combat of Mini-nuclear weapons....this is an obscenity and flies in the face of 30 years of human effort to create and implement nuclear non-proliferation treaties.....this would be an enourmous retro-grade step in human global affairs This is such a serious matter precisely because it would be totally ineffectual...the absolute irony is that mini-nukes are weapons of mass destruction and it seems hard for the U.s.govt to condemn nations that use or procure these weapons and then turn round and begin a program of there proliferation.....it.s looney-tunes.... and undermines all our well-being.....it diminishes our lives....all our lives!

Death of innocent civilian Saudi bombing.
Not only this terrible bombing in Saudia Arabia but also Chechnya has also suufered a similar car bombing event..... John Howard recently commented that as a result of the Iraq invasion we were living in a safer more optimistic world.....well I do not think so.....and the Australian people are gullible if they believe him..... I have never known a time so insidious as the time we live in now.......and with the possibility of little nukes being developed i think our situation is quite desperate....Watch out now for a double dissolution of our parliament....Kim Beazley will head up the labour party and the insidious Asio bill will be delivered through the parliament.....and the unelected backdoor operators [such as News Corp] will have succeeded in pushing their interests ahead of those of the Australian people..... I would not trust Kim Beazley as far as I could throw him and that is not far..... the Labour party is almost as big a sham as the liberals...Bi-polar politics do not make a democracy.

Moving 'beyond'....
We have a responsibility to future generations to move beyond a weapons driven culture and economy....a weapons economy can never be a healthy economy ....we justify war by claiming a wish to rid the world of weapons of mass destruction yet we are largely responsible for their proliferation...we somehow justify the paradox and to our dire peril we maintain the illusion and call it progress or developement or justified or under-standable or decent or real or sensible or any other word which frames our power in the universal blur that we fear so much. Little nuclear weapons are a terrible manifestation and an alarming developement in our death machine culture. We must stop creating our own image as target...we must move beyond..

We are all made of the same stuff.
We are all made of the same stuff ,the origon of which has been a great shared journey.....human pain and bodily frailty are universal's in a post-modern relativist world........it is of vital importance that we come to grasp this great sharing and to finally take responsibility for it......weapon making is an abrogation of that responsibility...political change requires a change of feeling ,perhaps the primary of which is empathy....empathy allows compassion...but these qualities cannot be embodied by weapons makers , despite the fact that the weapons makers insist on their connection to god they cannot possibly embody godnessness and in that lies the absurd joke. We are all made of the same stuff !

The developement of little nukes is a truly alarming developement particularly in a world that has changed the rules on pre-emption....intrinsic in the design of weapons is the consideration of the target....it is horrifying to believe that we still have the cold hearted malice to manufacture post-industrial death machines using humanity as the target....

A world with little nukes and dirty bombs.
It seems we have determined to live in a world of little nukes and dirty bombs.....for reasons { sic..as if reason had anything to do with it] I cannot understand. So culturaly we determine to create a role for ourselves as sitting ducks in this bizarre pathological sideshow that drains our well being and our resource in the ultimate delusion that we are furthering ourselves.......very strange...wierdness.

War is not fated it is determined.
Certain commentators believe that death through war is somehow the work of fate ,and that 'thats just an unfortunate side effect '..., and with a lofty wave of the hand say 'but it was necessary......'....well as far as i am concerned fate plays no roll whatsoever and to think it does is simplistic in the extreme....in a pre-emptive war ,you determine to attack a sovereign nation, you determine that you will kill a number of civilians and you do....you determine whether or not you have a humanitarian program in place to alleviate the suffering you cause....you determine what your political motivations are not just in the short term but in the mid and longer term as well.....you determine what your responsibility is to global justice..........you determine the whole box and dice and as a consequence of that determination innocent civilians lose their lives.

Media conglomerates such as Rupert Murdoch's News Corp have in-ordinate power...they are powerful agents in skewing democracy...they are not elected...yet I laugh when people say The President is the most powerful man in the world...in my mind its Rupert Murdoch anyday !.....I personally refuse to indulge in any 20th century fox production...I will not buy his newspapers...and I will not watch his television channels..a pox on the fox as far as I am concerned !

Death in Australian prison camp. Mohammed Yousef Saleh.
Mohammed Yousef Saleh sought political asylum in Australia...on his arrival he was incarcerated in the Port Hedland prison camp . Eight months after his arrival he died due to complications arising from an operation to remove a tumour from his stomach....on arriving in Australia he was already suffering the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder.....which was further exacerbated by a stay in the Juliet blockof Port Hedland.....interestingly the files concerning his stay in Juliet Block have mysteriously disappeared..... the effect of his stay in Juliet block had a seriously detrimental effect on both his physical and mental well being. The federal minister , Mr Ruddoch whose responsibility it is to maintain the safety and well being of asylum seekers has blood on his and his governments hands.....the only body with any official concern for the plight of these human beings is the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. The Federal Attorney General Daryl Williams is about to present to parliament a bill which limits the range and scope of the commission. I wonder why? It is astounding that a country of Austalia's standard of living cannot be far more compassionate and helpful to those who flee political persecution.....our country should be an example to the world , a model of human rights and justice....quite simply because it is so possibly easy to do so.

Marcel Duchamp 1916 N.Y.C.
Marcel was one of the first of the European artists to move to New York city..in his case extremely early on...this was a man away ahead of his time...the progenitor of conceptual art and maker of astonishing things....a grand master chess player he famously but deliberately reduced his art output to play .An extra-ordinary intelligence whose impact on 20th century art was phenomenal.....Marcel Duchamp.

Acting on bad intelligence.
It seems that the coalition and more particularly the U.S. have acted on bad intelligence in regard to weapons of mass destruction.....is their any justification for acting on bad intelligence ?...I do not think so....in fact in this case the political masters new very well that there were no banned weapons and they deliberately conned the population to justify the war crime they wished to perpetrate....the campaign to invade Iraq has a long background...banned weapons wre the smokescreen necessary to convince the population that the invasion was necessary.....despicable...truly despicable....but what is then worse is that when we find out the facts we do not act ....and we are all complicit to this moral and ethical outrage...

We were lynched.
And what.s with the "saving private lynch" story...now I am very glad a young soldier found their way home after a frightening ordeal...but I am so pissed off at the total fabrication of facts that was perpetrated by the millitary and the media with this story .....when you know the more real story you realise how laughable our leadership is ...how poor they are with moral leadership which is incomphrehensible to them.....ethics is meaningless to them .....they so easily stoop to the most superficial ideas to convince the population...I cannot believe how light weight our leaders actyally are ...six foot six year olds.

Hosing down the smoking gun problem.
This is a truly gigantic and absurd joke except its far to serious to laugh.....but where are those weapons of mass destruction that we were so direly warned about, that were the major justification for a pre-emptive war...where are those instruments of evil that were the moral and ethical backbone of the pro-war argument......oopps there does'nt seem to be any....oh well...hose it down...its a fait accomplie anyway.....War Crime!

Baghdad woman 2. The citizens of Baghdad are suffering.
The citizens of Baghdad are suffering under the most horrific conditions...a major typhoid breakout is very possible..no power, no cleanwater no sanitation , no rubbish removal ,no communications , no medicines ,hospitals in crisis ....the situation is dire....and this is called the liberation of the Iraqi people.......they are now living in far more squalor than prior to the invasionyet we are back in front of the tv congratulating ourselves on what a great job our troops did but anxious we have not missed tonights ephisode of friends or what ever...we have lost a sense of proportion...we are a sick culture....

Artists I really admire..Chaim Soutine.
To change the tone of my journal so that I Do not keep sounding like a bleeding heart liberal, which I am not...I have decided to create a series on my favourite artists...So my first choice for today is the incredible Chaim Soutine....this is the artist as a young man freshly arrived in Paris...Soutine is one of those painters, who when you see his work in the flesh, blows your head off...his amazing sense of gravity tearing at the sides of his canvases make his work overwhelmingly powerful...reproduction never does his work justice....a simply stunning and dark vision makes him one of my favourite artists......he was also a great friend to Modiglianni...generous and very poor most of his life.

Another Baghdad woman.
I have made a series of paintings called the women of Baghdad....the purpose of these works is to give voice to their plight...their loss of life , their loss of husbands, parents and children....their plight has been rendered voiceless by the millitary and power complexes...they are still suffering from lack of power. medicine , food , water , and communications......they are endangered by a weapons culture.....where is the humanity in the decimation of innocent civilian women.

Diminshed by war.
We have all been diminished by the war crime in Iraq...there is so much about art and performance I would love to discuss and relish and discover and to be fascinated with...unfortunately the war totally diminishes ones focus...sidetracked by rage and anger...saddened by violence and death...fearfull of our planetry vulnerability...sickened by the manipulation of the wishes of the people and the manipulation of ignorance..{some 45% of US citizens believe that Saddam Hussein bore direct responsibility for the WTC collapse..and do not believe that the US administration has not exploited that ignorance despite all evidence to the contrary]....depleted by the psychic horror that is war......and disappointed by our cultural inability to learn from the past how ineffective war is as a solution to global conflict. Yes we are all diminished by this war.

How long can the U.S. maintain a millitary administration in Iraq.
How long can the U.S. maintain a millitary administration in Iraq ?......several years possibly...but it seems unlikely that they will be able to establish a democracy....more likely we will see some kind of millitary government that undoubtedly will at sometime in the future be overthrown.....the Shi ite , Sunni divide is incomphrehensible to the western mind ,yet is the major governing problem facing a future Iraq solution.....meanwhile we bully our way through the world with so little regard for the complex effects that we create.....neo-fascism dressed up to look benign and harmless....neo-fascism in the name of border security and homeland defence...the lesson of 9/11 was that a dozen boxcutters could be devastating and all the missile shields in the world cannot protect us from pathological malevolence.

Baghdad woman.
It was very refreshing to hear ex-CIA agent Robert Baer talk very frankly about the real political manouverings that are the backdrop to the war in Iraq.......the liberation [sic] of the Iraqi people is the absolute last thing on the minds of the neo-con hawks....and OIL truly is one of the primary concerns of the coalition agenda.....notions that the world is somehow a safer place are a public relations joke....the powder keg that is the middle-east's political situation is being deliberately primed primarily because of the western dependence on saudi oil. As a consequence innocent women , men , and children have become victims to grasping political forces motivated by the power of the dollar. Questions need to be raised about the personal wealth of many U.S. politicians and the relationship of that wealth to the Saudi oil industry.....resist the media persuasion that is directed by organisations like Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.....these groups are morally bankrupt.

So much grief from 9/11.
It is so profoundly disappointing to see how our world has evolved from the disastrous events of sept 11 2001......We have allowed this terrible event become the justification for the execution for more terrible events and the loss of many innocent lives....and it seems that significant lessons have not been learnt and instead we have allowed this tragedy to be the hobby horse of idealogues who use it for leverage.....the neo-conservative push and its hawkish bloodlust is fear driven short-termism that is destined to fail but in the short term could endanger precious life.

Police state by stealth.
In Australia politicians [ of varying political persausions] and some media owners are undertaking a campaign of extra0rdinary measures , known as the asio bill , which will dliminish individual human rights and justice for australian citizens in the name of domestic security.....at the moment these forces cannot carry the day in parliament because of a hostile senate.....it is interesting how the media here are undermining our current opposition leader in favour of Kim Beazley.....what is insidious about this is that Beazley would probably throw his weight behind the ASIO bill...... watch out for a double dissolution driven by this issue over the next few years...particularly as a transition is inevitable due to the end of Howards primeministership. Watch out for the shoot out between Abbott and Costello.

Faceless in Australia.
Our conservative government in Australia ,not content with just involving us in the war crime in Iraq is also doing a cracking job {sic] of denying international justice too, and denying the human rights of ,those that seek asylum in this country. Our modus-operandi is to lock these people up in prison camps in the most harsh and remote areas of Australia and some Pacific islands, where we de-humanise,, de-base, and humiliate the to the extent that we rob them of their identities and make them faceless....and all in the name of border security....the effect on these poor souls is devastating and traumatic.....our lack of humanity is palpable...yet we are told that we are keeping Australia DECENT!

Saving there own skin.
Barney hated the idea of fighting when he was a young man...he had rather adroitly avoided it ...John also had no direct experience of combat......yet they felt comfortable to send young men in to do their dirty work.......the phallocentric's are like that.

Definitely not being Peter Singer.
The people that most alarmed Barney and John were ethicist's....Peter Singer was incomphrehensible to them....John particularly hated thinkers ,which was why he was doing such a splendid job of running his universities into the ground...he also hated the anti-war movement ,even though that included the pope...or perhaps that's not surprising in protestant australia.......John loved financial planners ,actuaries ,some merchant bankers and the monarchist movement....while the general public bored him particularly with its constant carping about the health system [ what did it matter, that at last he had decimated medicare by smashing its inherent community orientation and replacing it by a system that serves individual self interest only?] John's primary difficulties lay with other races,,he had brilliantly played a great race card in the last election ,yet still he felt uncomfortable . uneasy , the 'other' always concerned him ...and Phil was such splendid back-up.....it was astonishing how badly they had treated refugees seeking asylum and yet been able to get away with it......yes...good work [sic]....but there is more to be done thought John and I must do something about ethicists.

Being Leonard Bernstein.
John also woke in a fright, something about Barney always left him feeling overshadowed, and in his dreams he had lost the next election [something to do with a fight breaking out between Abbott and Costello]...he went to the den with a cocoa to calm his nerves. As he sat, he noticed the cover of an old album "the best of Leonard Bernstein"......oh for a head of hair like that..those lionesque good looks...still he thought as he rose himself up ' John Winston Howard' ......its got a ring to it.....and despite his banality he felt reassured.

Not being Woody Allen.
Barney woke up in the middle of the night with sweat pouring from his brow....a terrible nightmare...his guest John who was staying that week-end had sneezed and had blown the cocaine all over the rug in the den just like in that Woody Allen movie....he had to shake himself off ,those drug fueled day's were over...and he hated Woody Allen....and perhaps he really hated John, after all ,John does call himself a liberal...and all liberals are just leftist pinko's.....regime change in Australia?...perhaps not , we already did it in 1975 and now Mal has stabbed us in the back.

Being Henry Kissinger.
""" Would'nt it be strange to be Henry Kissinger thought John as he stared at the portrait on the wall of Barney's den.....still probably not nice to have quite that much blood on your hands.....could look terribly unseemly in the light of history and John always had an eye for the future ...he saw it as perhaps his chief responsibility. since seizing the glittering prize, to project a statesman like personna [ his middle name isn't winston for nothing ] and besides Iraq had been a "surgical -precision campaign" and had not bogged down like Vietnam when Henry was in his hey-day. Still that workman like rolling of the sleeves ,so typical of Henry, really impressed John as image for his nexy campaign on border security. Wow ..what a fabulous weekend at Barney's.

Week-end at Barney's.
What a week=end at Barney's.....it always feels great to bestride the world stage and issue forth with banalities like ' the world is a safer more optimistic place since the war in Iraq ',,,,classic John Howard......fine if your at Barney's but perhaps not quite so comfortable if you are in Baghdad....Barney was extremely agreeable all weekend despite the distraction from his pet project, the formation of 'NO-Do-Do' his new imformation and media wing modeled on the work of that classic kindred spirit General Franco..... who could forget those immortal lines.." one is a slave to what one say's but master of what you do not."......but as I was saying John had a brilliant weekend at Barney's and everybody at home was so impressed because they had seen Barney dressed up in millitary gear the night before.

Hell is life drying up.
A classic quote from a master..Joseph Campbell..'hell is life drying up'...............in a wage slave culture that is numbed by television this is the danger...so many burn out from workaholism and institutionalised boredom..it is important to work and PLAY...but our play life has been denuded by our accountant culture where the bottom line is always money....the mighty dollar .... a freedom that is bought by money is only the illusion of freedom.

Changing September 11.
If I had an opportunity to perform a miracle it would be ,to be able to ,wind the clock back to the dawn of sept 11 and to stop the aeroplanes from flying that day. So much grief and suffering not only for those that so sadly died that day but also the subsequent actions in Afghanistan and Iraq , would miraculously disappear . Unfortunately miraulous intervention on my part is looking fairly remote so perhaps we all have to create a miracle another way....empathy...political change requires a change of feeling.

In the spirit of the bee. Ayahuasca.
One day I would love to visit an Ayahuasca shaman...and maybe if I start to take better care that might be possible...at the moment I have no where near the grounding that would be necesary for that to be not only possible but realistic...the problem for most of us in the 1st world is that we have sold ourselves out to a tragic degree....we have literaly sold our souls to the devil, a devil that we created from our fear....we are so sucked in to the 'rational ' The rationalist mode is just a construction and a limited one at that. So we can not see sound , or hear the invisible landscapes , and we lie and steal with perfect equanimity. So the gifts of the vine of the dead are lost to us.

Resist the pathological cultural deathwish.
When I was a child I would get home from school and about six every night my mum would serve diiner and we would sit down to eat with the news on the television followed at sevev o'cock by the abc national news....these were the years of the vietnam war and every night for many years we saw footage [ black and white] of the fighting that was going on.....it was at that time that I clearly made the decison to myself that war was stupid........and not only stupid but controlled by vested interests that did not and still do not match up with the average person's wishes....we are persuaded by these vested interests that war is necessary....well it's not....in fact it warps our realities in a terrible way eg we might believe we live in a healthy economy.......but what is healthy about millitary research spending at the expense of public health or education. The global spending on millitary reseach is staggering......and all to serve a bizarre cultural pathological deathwish.

More Iraq civilian deaths.
It was reported that 13 more civilians were killed in a demonstration over the last days including three young boy's.....the Australian media are running a feel good story about a young boy Ali Abbas who lost his family and his arms during coalition missile attacks in the war....the line the media are taking is "oh ,how tragic , but look what we are doing to alleviate this poor boy's suffering....look we even got him a united jersey signed by David Beckham " . Now I am really glad that this poor boy is recieving good medical attention....he deserves no less...however the 'feel good story' is just a means by which the war mongers are salving thier consciences.....and it manipulates our sense of 'right action'.....the real point is that Ali Abbas should never have become a victim in the first place.
