The Mire
Writtten by Eugene Ionescoe. Directed by Simon Fisher
...theatre in universities can be very difficult…to find
plays that are flexible enough to suit large casts...I have made
plays for casts as large as 32 actors…this can be extremely
problematic… I am always’s on the search for plays that
can be adapted to a large cast…
Ionescoe’s the Mire is perfect in that regard… Ionescoe’s
work is the perfect invitation to play for a large ensemble…this
particular production had a cast of seventeen young and exciting
actors…
My primary interest in this production was the sculptural and
visual potentials of so many bodies in space. The text is very unusual
in that it is written in three coloumns…text , image and sound…the
text for me is like a map of the world...you can explore all of
it if you have time or just one continent if you don’t…we
did not have time to explore the lot so we concentrated on what
we could achieve given the restraints of time and space.
The play is essentially concerned with those moments in all our
lives when we get stuck and become mired in the detail of day to
day life.
The Mire is one of Ionescoes more obscure work’s but retains
the wonderful playfulness that is characteristic of his absurdist
style. |
